BROADVIEW HEIGHTS, Ohio — Throughout the course of a 68-year marriage, couples are bound to amass family and friends who enjoy celebrating such a long love. Tom and Kathleen Breslin know that firsthand, but with the COVID-19 pandemic, their loved ones had to get creative to celebrate their special day safely.
The Breslins were married 68 years ago Sunday, so to celebrate, their friends and family held a parade outside of their home in Broadview Heights.
Those closest to them stayed apart, practicing social distancing while still making it a party, bringing everything from signs to balloons.
“This is the greatest, this is better than if we had gone in anywhere," Kathleen said. “This is a surprise."
The two shared their secret for a long-lasting marriage.
“Prayer and wanting what’s best for the other person,” Kathleen said.
After cracking a joke, Tom attributed their successful marriage to his deep love for his wife.
“I love her very much, really I do. She’s been my right hand since the day we met,” Tom said.
Over their 68-year marriage, Tom and Kathleen have had seven children, 15 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren, with two more great-grandbabies on the way this summer.
