Car rams into crowd, injures 22 outside NASCAR race

Posted
A driver struck a crowd of people following Sunday’s NASCAR race at Martinsville Speedway in Virginia, injuring 22 pedestrians and sending nine of those victims to local hospitals.

The motorist -- who was driving a Chevrolet SSR convertible -- attempted to pass another car while waiting in post-race traffic when it struck the pedestrians, USA Today reports.

Most of the injured, whose ages ranged from 13 to 65, were reportedly treated at the scene. Seven people were taken to Martinsville's Memorial Hospital while two others were transported to Morehead Memorial Hospital in Eden, North Carolina.

No one was killed in the crash. Authorities are still investigating the incident, which they say does not appear to have been alcohol-related.

Citing Witness Roger Wolfe, USA Today reports that the front of the driver’s convertible was “smashed up” following the incident. The pedestrians were lined up near a helipad where autograph-seekers typically gather when the incident occurred.
