A 28-year-old racecar driver died Wednesday night at the Manitowoc Speedway.

The crash happened just after 7:30 p.m. local time during a heat race at the Speedway. It only involved one car.

The male driver crashed into the infield guardrail and on-scene EMT's responded immediately.

Because of the car's design, the roof needed to be removed and the driver was extricated from the car. The man received immediate medical attention and was transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Lt. Matt Wallander said the race Wednesday night was part of the Manitowoc County Fair at the Manitowoc Speedway.

The driver's name is not being released at this time, pending notification of family.
