Vault: '79 Indians players milk cows, toss eggs

Posted

The Cleveland Indians tried all kinds of promotions to attract fans to their home games at cavernous Municipal Stadium. There was the infamous Beer Night, the “I Hate the Yankees Hankies” Night and then Farmers Night.

I’ve posted in our video player the Farmers Night from July 6, 1979. This wasn’t the first time the Indians brought the farm to town; there was at least one other when they hosted the Blue Jays in 1977.

This pre-game contest had some of our favorite Tribe players taking part against players from the Minnesota Twins.

Mike Hargrove shows his skills milking a cow; we’re treated to a tight shot of his hands at work. The cow doesn’t seem to mind.

A bit later in the 40-second clip, Duane Kuiper plays egg long toss with outfield Dell Alston.

Two Twins players dial long distance for their egg toss.

Miss Ohio Apple Queen and Miss Ohio Pork Queen are all smiles watching the festivities, but alas, the Twins win the farm events.

If it’s any consolation, manager Jeff Torborg’s Indians won the ballgame 6-5 in front of 13,000 fans.
