A tragedy happened Saturday night when shots rang out at a rally for former President Donald Trump in Pennsylvania. One person in the crowd was killed, and two other people were in critical condition.

Biden also spoke earlier Sunday afternoon, stating that he has directed the Secret Service to review all security measures at the upcoming RNC that starts on Monday.

Additionally, Biden said that he ordered an independent review of national security at the Pennsylvania rally. This review will likely be in addition to investigations being done in Congress. Committees in the House and Senate have announced plans to launch their own investigations.

During a news conference on Sunday, the governor said he had spoken with Comperatore's wife and two daughters. He was described as a "hero" who dove on top of his family to protect them when the gunshots broke out.

The violence comes just a day before the Republican National Convention is set to begin in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Our Scripps News political team is in Milwaukee and reports security is being ramped up inside the Fiserv Forum, an arena in Downtown Milwaukee where the RNC is set to take place starting this week.

How the attempted assassination of former President Trump affect the RNC?

The former president was rushed off the stage by the Secret Service as shots rang out. Trump is now recovering in New Jersey. His team says he is doing fine after being shot in the ear.

Two eyewitnesses who were attending a rally for Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump in Butler County, Pennsylvania, have described what they saw during what law enforcement is calling an assassination attempt.

Authorities say 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks of Bethel Park, Pennsylvania, was responsible for the attack. The Associated Press reported that law enforcement said they found bomb-making materials in the suspect's vehicle and home, located in a suburb outside of Pittsburgh about an hour away from where the rally took place.

An AR-style rifle was found near the shooter at the scene of Saturday's rally in Butler, Pennsylvania. Officials said they believe the gun belonged to the shooter's father, but they are still investigating how he obtained it.

Officials are still trying to determine a motive and the shooter's ideology, but they hope his phone, which was sent to an FBI lab in Virginia, will provide them with answers. They are also combing over the suspect's social media accounts.

A former Secret Service agent gave some insights into what security breakdowns could have led up to the assassination attempt against former President Donald Trump.

The Ohio State Highway Patrol is providing security for U.S. Senator and top vice president contender J.D. Vance after former Trump survived the apparent assassination attempt Saturday.

Gov. Mike DeWine "approved" a request for security Saturday at 6:40 p.m., according to the governor's spokesperson, Dan Tierney. Vance lives in the Cincinnati area, so troopers are monitoring his home.
