CLEVELAND — The Ohio Department of Transportation is looking to hire multiple positions across Northeast Ohio as the colder weather approaches.

This season, ODOT says they are seeing a lot more applications caused by high unemployment numbers due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Despite the economy adding 661,000 jobs in September, the Bureau of Labor Statistics said Friday the unemployment rate stood at 7.9%.

With unemployment still up, that means more applications for part-time and seasonal work.

ODOT says they typically see a handful of applications for seasonal employment, but this year they’ve seen as many as three-times their usual applicants.

ODOT is looking to fill spots in Ashland, Crawford, Cuyahoga, Erie, Geauga, Lake, Lorain, Medina, Richland, Summit and Wayne counties. The rate of pay is $18.05 an hour. Employees typically work 40 hours per week but can work more if there are snow and ice events. They may work up to a maximum of 1,000 hours.

“Our primary need for the hiring, is because going into the winter season we like to make sure that we have the proper staffing levels available so that we can make sure our routes are covered,” said NeQuinne Chielo, business and human resources administrator for ODOT. “So for our H/T Seasonal position, which is typically someone that would come in and fill a driver vacancy for plowing, qualifications for that position are three months training or three months experience and that individual must have a Class B driver’s license.”

ODOT is also holding a job fair on Oct. 24 at the Garfield Heights location at 5500 Transportation Blvd from 8 a.m. to noon.
