CLEVELAND — Recently signed cornerback Kevin Johnson was hospitalized after practice Wednesday and is under observation at University Hospitals, according to the Cleveland Browns.
Johnson sustained an abdominal injury after rookie tight end Harrison Bryant landed on him during practice Wednesday, according to the Associated Press. He was admitted to University Hospitals that afternoon and tested, the team said.
Test results indicated that Johnson sustained a laceration to his liver.
A 2014 studypublished to the U.S. National Library of Medicine National Health Institute found that healing of a simple liver laceration takes around two to four months and more complex injuries can take up to six months.
The Browns said that Johnson is resting comfortably and is expected to remain hospitalized for at least 24 hours for observation.
Johnson signed with the Browns in March after spending one season with the Bills. He spent his first four seasons with the Texans and Johnson, a former first-round pick out of Wake Forest, comes to Cleveland after one season with the Bills. The Browns have been dealing with several injuries since the start of training camp. Running back Nick Chubb was sidelined after being placed in concussion protocol and defensive end Myles Garrett has not practiced with a tweaked hamstring. Safety Karl Joseph and wide receiver Jarvis Landry have been limited as they come back from a foot injury and hip surgery, respectively. Center JC Tretter underwent a knee procedure which has taken him out of practice and linebacker Mack Wilson recently suffered a knee injury during practice.
