CLEVELAND — The Cleveland Browns narrowed down their roster to 53 men Saturday and at the punter position have chosen rookie Jamie Gillan, also known as "The Scottish Hammer.”
Gillan will take the reigns from veteran Britton Colquitt who has been on the Browns since 2016.
In Colquitt’s three seasons with the Browns, he recorded 246 punts for 11,339 yards with a career-long 79-yard punt last season.
Gillan drew the attention of his coaches and fans with his 74-yard punt in the second preseason game against the Colts. He impressed again with six punts for 266 yards in the final preseason game of the season.
What set Gillan apart and seemingly won him the position battle was his ability to tackle.
Gillan has a background in rugby, playing for Highland Rugby Club before transitioning to football, and his skill set showed in the preseason. Gillan made three tackles in his preseason outings, two of which came in the last game against the Lions.
Special teams coordinator Mike Priefer previously said the way for Gillan to make the roster was to show consistency.
“[Gillan] needs to find consistency. Britton [Colquitt] needs to do what he does. Jamie [Gillan] will win the job if he is more consistent. Britton will win the job if he is obviously the guy that he has been the last several years here in Cleveland,” Priefer said.
It looks like the Scottish Hammer proved his consistency.
Thankyou to all that have supported, time to get better and better! Go Browns ❤️🐶 pic.twitter.com/o0eZzIJcnj
