KENT, Ohio — Gov. Mike DeWine has ordered all United States and Ohio flags to be flown at half-staff in honor of the lives lost during the Kent State University tragedy on May 4, 1970.
All state-owned buildings across Ohio, the Ohio Statehouse, Vern Riffe Center and Rhodes Tower will all fly their flags at half-staff until sunset Monday.
On May 4, 1970, during a mass protest on Kent State’s campus against the bombing of Cambodia by U.S. military forces, 28 National Guard soldiers fired around 67 rounds in 13 seconds into the crowd, killing four students and injuring nine others.
Monday marks the 50th anniversary of the tragedy.
