CLEVELAND — A spokesperson for USPS said mail service in Northeast Ohio will be suspended after 2 p.m. Wednesday because of the weather.
This update comes after USPS said mail would be delivered in Cleveland on Wednesday.
Originally, USPS sent out an alert on Tuesday night saying they were going to halt mail delivery services in any zip code that began with 441 and 458.
On Wednesday morning, USPS said that mail would be delivered after all despite sub-zero temperatures across Northeast Ohio. "We do have procedures in place. We have an employee hotline number where employees can verify if they're working. I apologize if there was confusion," said USPS Spokesperson Twana Barber.
In a statement, USPS explained how weather conditions are impacting mail delivery:
We continue to monitor weather conditions as well as evaluate transportation availability. With any winter weather situation, we typically attempt delivery where we can while emphasizing safety to our employees. Employees are encouraged to contact their employee hotline for updated information since plant employees and carriers may have different reporting information.
Some instruction we provide our employees to dress for this weather include:
- Layer clothing
- Keep a change of socks and other clothing to switch into if anything you are wearing gets wet
- Wear gloves and a hat at all times / protect face and extremities
- Keep warm by drinking hot liquids
- If at all possible take breaks in a warm area, vehicle, etc.
- Use hand warmers
Some deliveries may not be made due to conditions and we want our employees back to the office timely. Any deliveries missed today will be made Thursday.
Barber said mail service is expected to resume Thursday but also stressed the weather could change plans.
